Beetle (Coleoptera) communities inside and outside the pest-resistant fencing of a New Zealand ecosanctuary

The ecological impacts of invasive mammals are widely documented around the world. In New Zealand, fencing designed to exclude non-native is used for conservation and restoration efforts. Orokonui Ecosanctuary a 307-hectare coastal Otago reserve (Dunedin, Zealand) that surrounded by mammal-exclusion fencing. goal present study was investigate how excluding including (native) animals inside fence has influenced ground- litter-dwelling beetle (Coleoptera) abundance, diversity, community composition. We hypothesised composition would be different whether beetles sampled were from sites or outside fence. Beetles extracted litter soil six (three inside, three outside) two times (once in winter, once summer). species composition, size distribution, trophic guild distribution between seasons compared. Our results suggest harbour greater abundance diversity beetles. found high native both Ecosanctuary’s Further research may find evidence fenced sanctuary providing ‘halo effect’ whereby thriving within spreading out into surrounding landscape also outcompeting introduced
